Today officially marks six years in the history of the life of fiercely outspoken opposition leader in Tanzania, Tundu Lissu, who was shot 16 times by unknown people on September 7, 2017, after returning from a parliamentary session in Dodoma.
Lissu, 55, who is the Vice Chairman of the main opposition party, Chadema, was transported to Nairobi for treatment before proceeding to Belgium for advanced treatment, where he stayed in exile for more than three years.
The brutal attack inflicted a permanent injury, leaving him with a slight limp even after almost 20 surgeries. Unfortunately, there has been no information provided about the suspect who carried out the shooting attack on Tundu Lissu.

Lissu, a politician with unwavering political views returned to Tanzania in 2020 and vied for the presidency where he lost against the late John Magufuli, who was running for his second term through the ruling  Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
However, after losing the election which he claimed was filled with “shameless” and widespread vote rigging, he decided to return to Belgium to continue treatment while promising to return to the country.

Lissu eventually returned to Tanzania from exile on January 25, 2023, and till today, he strongly continues with his political activities after being assured of his safety by the Government of Tanzania.
