Several members of parliament that voted in favor of the disputed Finance Bill 2024 faced the wrath of angry anti-Finance Bill protesters. Some of the MPs were attacked one-on-one as others saw their properties vandalized.
Here are some of the MPs who faced the wrath of the angry protesters:
On June 25, 2024, protestors stormed and set ablaze the office of Kimani Ichung’wah, the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, in Kikuyu Sub-County. The footage circulating online showed thick, black smoke engulfing the office as residents pelted stones at the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) buildings. The protesters accused him of betraying his people by supporting the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi’s office was also razed by residents on the same day, with similar accusations against him for voting in favor of Finance Bill.
Molo Member of Parliament, Kuria Kimani’s rural home in Nakuru County, was also set ablaze by angry protestors after Members of Parliament voted to adopt amendments of the Finance Bill 2024. His residence was vandalized, and properties of unknown value were looted. Kimani’s two vehicles were reduced to ashes, and his Ford Ranger was damaged when its windscreen was smashed. Police have arrested four people for their alleged involvement in the vandalism and arson attack.
Kieni Member of Parliament Njoroge Wainaina suffered significant losses during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests. Angry youths in Nyeri County broke into his Chieni supermarket, making away with goods worth millions of shillings. The supermarket was also set on fire during the demonstrations. He estimated his losses at Ksh. 550 million due to the destruction of his businesses. Thirty-five people have been arraigned in court for allegedly vandalizing his supermarket and stealing goods worth Sh550 million.
Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi also lost properties in his newly opened nightclub, Timba XO Club. The situation was tense, with protesters causing severe damage to Sudi’s club and making away with liquor worth thousands. The protests had a significant impact on both politicians’ properties and businesses.
Tens of youths invaded Naivas Supermarket on Tuesday evening looting goods worth millions of shillings before torching the office of Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara.
All these protesters were driven by anger over tax hikes in the finance bill, resulting in clashes with police and fatalities. It’s a challenging situation for the entire country, as authorities are investigating the incidents.
