Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has been found guilty of contempt of court for repeatedly ignoring court summons.
High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi ruled that Masengeli’s actions demonstrated impunity and open defiance, which cannot be tolerated.
“Masengeli is guilty of contempt and the court ought to punish him accordingly,” said the Judge.
The court had summoned him six times to explain the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of three people in Kitengela, but he failed to appear each time.
Masengeli was required to appear in court on today, on Monday, to explain the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of activist Robert Njagi and two brothers allegedly abducted by police at Kitengela August 19 2024.
He instead he sent his Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat to represent him.
Masengeli has today along with other top police officials, visited Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa counties on a security assessment mission.
Their visit aims to evaluate the security situation in the northern regions, which have faced ongoing challenges due to their proximity to the Somalia border and frequent attacks by Al-Shabaab militants.
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi requested that Justice Lawrence Mugambi sentence him to six months in civil jail, following his defiance of the Court orders.
