Tanzania’s main opposition party Chadema has called for fresh demonstrations over increased cases of abductions, and Killings.
Addressing a crisis meeting at the party headquarters in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam, party chairman Freeman Mbowe said they have resolved to go to the streets to demand respect for human rights including rights to Life and freedom of expression.
The meeting comes just 2 days after Chadema cadre Ali Kibao was abducted tortured and killed in cold blood and his face doused by acid.
‘’Staring Monday, September 23rd, 2024, we will go to the streets to demand the lives of people who have been abducted. We also want the government to take immediate steps to release abductees, resignation of officials from the security organs, and people held responsible’’ said Freeman Mbowe.
The party also wants an independent body to investigate extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances that have been witnessed in recent days
‘’It’s ironic for the president to form a judicial inquiry committee or the police to investigate themselves. How can a prime suspect investigate their misdeed? As a party, we demand an international body to take up the matter and for that reason, we recommend Scotland Yard from England to carry out the investigations over abductions and killings in Tanzania’’ Added Mbowe
According to Chadema, the ongoing abductions, enforced disappearances and killings are intimidation tactics by the ruling party CCM to instill fear to apposition ahead of local government and general election.
”All you’re we are seeing including abductions and killings is a calculated move by President Samia to create confusion and steal election. This is what former president John Magufuli did and eventually stole the 2020 elections” said Lissu
Chadema has also declared a national morning to mourn the slain Ali Kibao, in which the party’s flag will be flown at half-mast until justice is served.
