Tundu Lissu’s treason charges sparks heated debate in Tanzanian Parliament

Ahead of Chadema Chairman Tundu Lissu’s arraignment in court on Thursday, 24th April 2024, over treason charges allegations, the Tanzanian National Assembly has been triggered by heated debate over his detention.

Lissu’s Matter was brought to parliament’s attention by special seats MP Anatropia Theonest, who questioned the legality of his arbitrary arrest. Ms. Anatropia said the slogan ‘’No Reform, No Election” can never warrant treason charges.

”President Samia Suluhu Hassan is celebrated for championing reconciliation through her 4Rs. Arresting someone for calling for reforms goes against the spirit of these values,” Ms Anatropia said

She said the Tanzanian people are demanding electoral reforms before the country’s general election.

“Is it fair for Mr Lissu to be detained? Are we now detaining people simply because they are calling for reforms? Is this right? Some people worked hard to secure the peace we enjoy today. We must not jeopardise that peace due to selfish political interests surrounding elections.” Added Ms Anatropia

But in a quick rejoinder, Special Seats MP Juliana Shonza dismissed the claims that the ruling party, CCM, is resisting election reforms

“The late Prof Baregu, who was a prominent member of Chadema, was on that committee. However, midway through the constitutional process, Chadema withdrew from Parliament and declined further participation,” she said

The unfolding court case and ensuing parliamentary exchanges highlight the growing political tension in the run-up to the 2025 General Election.

Mr Lissu was dramatically arrested on April 9 shortly after addressing a political rally in Mbinga area in Ruvuma and was formally charged with treason and dissemination of false information

He was arraigned in court but denied bail. His case will be mentioned on Thursday, 24th April at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court
