Tanzania Opposition Leader Tundu Lissu Remanded for 14 more days

Chadema Chairperson Tundu Lissu’s treason charges will be mentioned again on 2nd June 2025, after the police and the State requested more time to conclude their investigations. The Kisutu magistrates court granted them their prayers and ruled that Lissu be remanded for 14 more days.

However, Lissu lawyers led by Senior Counsel Mpale Mpoki, Dr. Rugemeleza Nshala, and Peter have objected to the move, citing infringement of their clients’ fundamental human rights.

The counsels also submitted several petitions to the court requesting the court to compel the state to explain what exactly is limiting their investigation, having initially informed the Court that all the evidence concerning the case is online and accessible.

The defence lawyers also submitted that they are not happy with the way heavily armed and masked prison officers were manning their client.

Lissu’s Counsel have pleaded with the Kisutu Magistrate, Mr Godfrey Mhini to order the removal of police officer in courtroom since according to the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania 1977 the Court does not recognise the accused as guilty and that the act of their client being surrounded by a large number of soldiers is unconstitutional.

After issuing the rulings, the Court adjourned the case for 14 days to 02/06/2025, and the accused was taken to remand.
