Police Block Major Roads Leading to Nairobi CBD Ahead of Saba Saba Protests

Nairobi was heavily disrupted early on Monday, July 7th as police set up roadblocks on major routes leading to the Central Business District (CBD), in anticipation of the Saba Saba protests. Commuters faced significant delays and roadblocks, with major roads like Thika Road, Mombasa Road and Ngong Road rendered impassable, as security forces stepped up their efforts to control access to the city ahead of the planned demonstrations. Many commuters were left stranded and struggling to reach their destinations.

Protesters chant at Kenyan anti-riot police officers as a plume of tear gas rises in the background during a demonstration over the death of Kenyan blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody, as the government presented the 2025-2026 budget statement in downtown Nairobi on June 12, 2025. Both public and private vehicles were turned away, with only government and emergency vehicles allowed through. Police action came despite the government’s claim that July 7th would be a normal working day. As a result, businesses in the city took extra precautions, many closing their doors with metal barricades, while schools advised students to stay at home.

The Saba Saba protests are held each year to commemorate the historic events of July 7th 1990, when Kenyans took to the streets demanding free elections and the introduction of multi-party democracy.
