Asha-Rose Migiro Makes History as CCM’s First Female Secretary-General

Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has appointed veteran diplomat and former UN Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, as its new Secretary-General. The announcement, made on Saturday, August 23, 2025, in Dodoma, marks a historic moment as Migiro becomes the first woman to hold the powerful post in the party’s history.

Migiro replaces Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, who has now been named CCM’s vice-presidential candidate for the October General Election. Her elevation comes as CCM prepares for the upcoming October 29 General Election.

A lawyer by training, Migiro has long been involved in both domestic and international politics. She previously served as Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs before becoming the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General between 2007 and 2012, the highest diplomatic office ever held by a Tanzanian. Analysts say her experience on the world stage could help reposition CCM as it seeks to appeal not only to Tanzanian voters but also to the wider international community.

As Secretary-General, Migiro is tasked with running the party’s day-to-day affairs, uniting factions within CCM and coordinating campaigns at a time when the opposition is stepping up its preparations.

With her background in diplomacy and advocacy for women’s empowerment, she may help CCM broaden its reach among young people and women, groups that are increasingly demanding a bigger voice in Tanzania’s politics.

Her appointment, together with President Samia, means that for the first time in Tanzania’s history, CCM’s two most powerful leadership roles are held by women.
