Two prominent Tanzanian online activists, Innocent Paul Chuwa, also known as Kiduku, and Farida Mikoroti, were granted bail by the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam on October 1, 2025. The duo had been in custody for approximately one week, facing allegations of online offenses.
However, they were released on condition. The conditions of their release stipulate that they must report to the police station daily, pending further legal proceedings. Additionally, the authorities have reserved the right to summon them to court at any time to respond to the charges leveled against them.
The activists’ release was facilitated by the collaborative efforts of their legal team, comprising Kulwa William Maduhu from the Center for Legal and Human Rights, Paul Kisabo from the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Network, and Fredrick Msaki from the Tanganyika Law Society. These legal professionals ensured that the activists’ rights were protected throughout the bail process, upholding the principles of due process and fair representation.
This development highlights the ongoing tensions between the Tanzanian government and online activists, raising concerns about freedom of expression and the rule of law, especially during this electioneering period in Tanzania
