Acting Police IG Gilbert Masengeli Sentenced to Six Months Imprisonment

High court judge Lawrence Mugambi has sentenced acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli to serve six months for defying  court orders.
Acting Police IG Gilbert Masengeli to face jail sentence
This decision was made after he repeatedly ignored court summons related to the disappearance of three people in Kitengela.
However, the judge has given him the option to attend court in person within the next seven days, which could potentially suspend his sentence.
According to Justice Lawrence Mugambi, the court cannot allow impunity and open defiance, and those hellbent won’t find refuge.
Masengeli was summoned to appear in court to explain the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of activist Robert Njagi and two brothers who were allegedly abducted by police at Kitengela on August 19, 2024.
The Acting IGP instead kept on deifying several summons issued by the court. In the last summons on Monday, September 9, 2024, he sent his Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat to represent him.
Mugambi, in his brief ruling, said the IGP has held the court at ransom court and is no longer able to ascertain what could have happened to the petitioners.
