The workers of the Besix Ballast Nedam (BBN) company in Tanga, Tanzania, have gone on strike demanding the delayed payment of their salaries. The strike began on Wednesday evening when they downed tools. Many of the workers were seen carrying banners with the inscription “We want our rights. Beware of Conmen” as they headed towards the offices of the BBN company’s management.

The workers also lament poor working conditions, lack of proper contracts for employees, and small allowances. They also cited widespread corruption within the company.
BBN is a company tasked with constructing an oil pipeline (EACOP) from Hoima City, Uganda, to Tanga Port, Tanzania. This multi-billion-dollar project spans 1,147 kilometers and passes through 10 districts in Uganda and 8 regions in Tanzania.
However, the project has faced opposition from residents along the pipeline route. They complain of inadequate public education, low compensation, displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and potential risks associated with a pipeline rupture.
Environmental activists have also strongly opposed the project, claiming EACOP poses threats to humans, the environment, and wildlife. They say forests, national parks, and game reserves in Uganda have been encroached upon to pave the way for the pipeline, affecting some wildlife.
They also fear that if the pipeline bursts, it could cause significant harm to humans, marine life, and wildlife. Environmentalists say there was inadequate education for communities affected by the project, and many have not received sufficient compensation. The project, being guarded by the military, activists fear the army may be involved in intimidation and, more particularly, women and girls could face sexual harassment.
