CCM nominates President Samia’s daughter and son-in-law to vie for MP seats

Tanzania’s ruling Party, CCM, has officially announced the names of its nominated members to contest in various parliamentary positions in the run-up to the 2025 General Elections.

Among the names that caught the attention of many people was that of Wanu Hafidh Ameir, the daughter of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Wanu Hafidh Ameir was listed as one of the candidates to battle it out for the CCM nomination certificate for the Makunduchi constituency parliamentary position. Makunduchi constituency is in Zanzibar and President Samia was an MP in the area between 2010- 2015.

Before her nomination, Wanu Hafidh was the nominated MP representing Unguja North region.

Interestingly, Wanu Hafidh’s husband, who is President Samia Suluhu’s son-in-law, Mohamed Omary Mchengerwa, has also been nominated to defend his Rufiji Parliamentary seat. Mchengerwa is the current Minister of State, Office of the President, Regional and Local Government.

Her nomination has sparked mixed reactions, especially on social media platforms, over the credibility of the process and the involvement of family affairs in the CCM party leadership.

Former President Jakaya Kikwete’s wife and son were also given direct nominations to vie for MP seats in the upcoming general election.

In this year’s election, President Samia Suluhu Hassan will fly the CCM flag and will be deputized by CCM Secretary General Emmanuel Nchimbi, who will be her Running Mate. The two were also given a direct nomination.

However, several members perceived to be President Samia’s critics have been dropped from the nomination list. Among them are Kisesa MP Luhaga Mpina, Arusha Urban MP Mrisho Gamba and MP January Makamba

Tanzania will hold its general election on 29th October 2025.
