The National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Committee is actively resisting proposals to abolish the fund.
This proposal, led by Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda, aims to reduce government expenditure as an austerity measure.
Committee chairperson Musa Sirma and other MPs argue that the NG-CDF has been crucial in supporting poor households, particularly in paying school fees and upgrading learning infrastructure.
“All of us are assembled here to benefit from this crucial kitty, and you can clearly see what the fund is doing in upgrading our learning infrastructure,” Sirma, who attended an NG-CDF bursary distribution event in Dagoretti-North Constituency on Thursday, stated.
Dagoretti-North lawmaker Beatrice Elachi, on the other hand, has urged parents to play their part by ensuring timely payment of fee balances reiterating that the NG-CDF bursaries alone are not sufficient to keep learners in school.
However, the MPs believe that abolishing the fund would negatively impact grassroots development and education.
