Chadema Deputy Secretary General Amani Golugwa arrested

Chadema Deputy Secretary General, Amani Golugwa, has been arrested by the Police in Dar es Salaam. Golugwa was arrested on Monday night at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) as he prepared to board a Turkish Airlines flight to Belgium to represent the party at the International Democracy Union (IDU) conference in Brussels, which starts tomorrow in Belgium.

A statement issued by the Chadema says that the police force seriously brutalized Golugwa. His phone and laptop were also confiscated. He has been taken to the central police station. No charges have been formally levelled against him.

‘’We have spoken to the Turkish Airlines management, who he was travelling with, and they have informed us he has not been able to fly.  The person who informed us about Golugwa’s arbitrary arrest said that he had been seriously beaten by police. He is also unreachable on the phone”, Read the party’s statement.

Golugwa has been a fierce critic of President Samia Suluhu’s government for some time now by condemning the administration of increased cases of abductions, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances.

His arrest comes slightly over a month after Tanzania police officers dramatically arrested Chadema party Chairman Tundu Lissu over claims of incitement and dissemination of falsehood. Lissu was later charged with treason. He’s still in police custody.

On Monday, the party’s vice chairperson, John Heche, survived an arrest attempt during his campaign trail in parts of the Mwanza region.

Another Chadema party member, Mdude Nyagali’s whereabouts are currently unknown after he was picked up from his home by unnamed individuals.
