The clip shows Nominated MP Umi Harun and her East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) counterpart Falhada Iman wrestle each other to the ground as others try to separate them.
In the video captured by someone on Parliament grounds, the two lawmakers can also be heard having a verbal exchange.
Ms Harun later released a statement describing the incident as unfortunate, saying she had made a formal complaint.
“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds, a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother. My colleague from the EALA parliament who has expressed longstanding differences with my work acted in a manner that I find unacceptable,” Ms Harun said.
She said she regretted the incident and will provide further details on the matter.
While Ms Harun may face the powers and privileges committee over the incident, it’s not clear what will happen to Ms Iman, who is an EALA member based in Arusha and therefore may not be subject to the Kenyan parliament’s standing orders.
Consequently, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has banned EALA MP Falhada Dekow from accessing Parliament Buildings for 90 days.
In a statement dated Wednesday, April 9, the Speaker stated that the decision was taken after the EALA MP was captured fighting with ODM-nominated MP Umulkher Harun Mohamed.
Additionally, the Speaker directed the EALA MP to write a letter explaining the fight and also issue a public apology.
The apology is expected to be tendered to the Speaker’s office in writing by 5 pm on Monday, April 14 2025.
