The Yom Kippur War, also known as the October War or the Fourth Arab-Israeli War, took place from October 6 to October 25, 1973

The Yom Kippur War, also known as the October War or the Fourth Arab-Israeli War, took place from October 6 to October 25, 1973.

It was initiated by a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel. The war began on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, catching the Israeli Defense Forces by surprise.

Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and advanced into the Sinai Peninsula, while Syrian forces attacked the Golan Heights.

Despite initial successes, the Arab forces were eventually repelled by Israel, which managed to recapture the territories.

A ceasefire was brokered by the United Nations on October 25, 1973.

The war had significant political and military consequences, leading to a shift in the balance of power in the Middle East and eventually paving the way for peace negotiations between Egypt and Israel
