European Parliament To Hold Emergency Debate On Tundu Lissu’s Case Today

The European Parliament is holding an emergency debate today, May 7th, 2025, on the case of Tundu Lissu, the leader of Tanzania’s opposition party, CHADEMA. Lissu is facing treason charges, which carry a potential death sentence. The debate will focus on human rights, democracy and political oppression under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.

The debate will take place from 13:00 to 22:00 CET and following the discussions, European lawmakers will vote on a resolution addressing Lissu’s case and the broader political situation in Tanzania tomorrow, May 8th, 2025.
