Five Kenyan police officers have been arrested for allegedly helping a suspected murderer and 12 Eritrean citizens arrested for illegal immigration to escape from a police cell at Gigiri police station in Nairobi.
Prosecutors have asked for 14 days to conduct further investigations related to the case.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Collins Jumaisi Khalusa, who reportedly confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, disappeared from the police station.
The escape of the suspects was discovered during a routine morning inspection which is usually held.
According to the incident report, the group escaped by cutting the wire mesh roof and adding a perimeter wall.
Senior police officials who visited the scene indicated that preliminary investigations indicated that the escape was an inside job.
Jumaisa, 33, was initially detained after nine dismembered bodies were found in an abandoned quarry in Nairobi.
The victims, aged between 18 and 30, were all killed in the same manner, police said. Khalusa was scheduled to appear in court on Friday to enter his plea.
The authorities are asking the public to come forward with any information that may help in the search for thirteen people who escaped.
