Tanzania is mourning the loss of Prof. Mikol Philemon Sarungi, a respected orthopedic surgeon and former government minister, who passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 87. His family confirmed that he died peacefully in Dar es Salaam. His daughter, Maria Sarungi Tsehai, a well-known human rights activist, also shared the heartbreaking news on social media.

A Life of Service and Leadership
Born on March 23, 1936, in Tarime, Tanzania, Prof. Sarungi dedicated his life to medicine, education, and public service. He pursued his medical studies abroad, earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Szeged, Hungary, in 1966, followed by a Master’s degree in Surgery from the same institution in 1970. He later specialized in orthopedics and trauma at the University of Vienna and replantation surgery at the University of Shanghai.
Prof. Sarungi’s career in academia began in 1971 when he joined the University of Dar es Salaam as a lecturer in surgery. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become a professor and head of the surgery department. He also served as the Director-General of Muhimbili Medical Center from 1984 to 1990, playing a key role in improving Tanzania’s healthcare sector.
Political Contributions
Beyond medicine, Prof. Sarungi played a significant role in Tanzania’s government. He served in various ministerial positions, including:
- Minister of Health (1990-1992)
- Minister of Communications and Transport (1992-1993)
- Minister of Education and Culture (1993-1995)
- Minister of Defense and National Service
- His leadership extended beyond government as he was also the Vice Chairman of the University of Dar es Salaam Council from 1989 to 1991.
