Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has been appointed as the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
In a statement released on March 25th 2026, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said Kikwete will help support the AU’s efforts to respond to political, peace and security challenges facing the region.

According to the AU, Kikwete’s role will include supporting preventive diplomacy, encouraging inclusive political dialogue, building trust among key players and strengthening regional cooperation aimed at promoting peace and stability.
The AU said the former Tanzanian leader will work closely with regional and international partners, including IGAD, the East African Community, the League of Arab States and the United Nations, among others.

The commission noted that the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea remain important to both regional peace and global trade, making coordinated efforts in the area necessary.
Youssouf said he is confident that Kikwete’s leadership and experience will help support countries in the region and contribute to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace, stability and prosperity.
