Having grown up in the Mathare informal settlement, Rachael Mwikali has become one of Kenya’s most passionate feminist activists and human rights defenders. Her journey has not been easy, it’s a story of resilience, determination, and a deep love for her community.
Rachael’s activism started as a response to the injustices she witnessed growing up in Mathare. From a young age, she saw how inequality and violence affected not just her life, but those around her. This inspired her to fight for the rights of women, girls, and the marginalized, even before she knew she was an activist.
In 2014, Rachael co-founded the Coalition for Grassroots Human Rights Defenders Kenya (CGHRD), a movement aimed at protecting grassroots activists and bringing attention to the struggles faced by the most vulnerable. Although it was established in 2014, the coalition gained visibility in 2016, growing stronger as it worked to give a voice to those in informal settlements and rural areas. Rachael’s work ensures that all people, regardless of gender, class, or background, are represented and their rights defended.
One of her most talked-about initiatives is Pussy Power, a movement she co-founded to challenge the oppression of women and reclaim their power. Rachael believes in taking bold action, and Pussy Power has become a rallying cry for women who refuse to be silenced.
Despite the dangers that come with activism, especially in Kenya, Rachael continues to push forward. She mentors young women to become leaders in their own communities and ensures that her work will continue even when she’s not around.
Rachael Mwikali’s story is one of hope, strength, and the belief that everyone has the power to make a difference. She’s not just a voice for Mathare, she is a voice for change across Kenya and beyond.
