Gloves off, CCM MP demands electoral reforms ahead of the general election

Kawe MP and founder of  Glory of Christ Church, Tanzania, Bishop Josephat Gwajima, has pleaded with the government to effect changes in the electoral body as demanded by Chadema.

Gwajima says it will be prudent if minimal reforms in election laws are implemented to allow the main opposition party, Chadema, to participate in the October 2025 general elections.

Chadema has since announced that it will not participate in any election unless there are reforms in the electoral system. Chadema also intends to block the election.

‘’As CCM, we can proceed with the election and win. Winning is not a big deal. But ruling a divided nation is the biggest challenge.’’ Said Gwajima

He added, ‘’ Let’s decide and give Chadema a minimal reform. Let us weigh the options of what reforms are affordable at the moment that will allow Chadema to participate in elections”.

‘’ How will you bring development to a divided country? You will face numerous crises with the international community, and internally, we shall also slow down development-wise, which will not be good.’’

To this end, the CCM member of parliament has proposed the formation of a special parliamentary sitting to look into the grievances raised by Chadema as far as election laws are concerned.

‘’I propose that the parliament have a two- or three-week special sitting to formulate electoral reforms that will allow CHADEMA to participate in the general election.’’ Appealed Gwajima.

‘’ We want to win them fair and square,’’ He added.

Gwajima believes that if everybody is included in the election process, then Tanzania will remain united even after elections.

However, his stance on critical issues facing the country, such as enforced disappearances, has landed him in hot soup.

He has been castigated for criticizing his party and government. His actions have seen his church, the Glory of Christ, shut down and several of his church members arrested.
