Gor Mahia raises concerns over cases of poor officiating in Kenya Premier League

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has raised concerns over the standard of officiating in the Kenyan Premier League.

Speaking on Wednesday, 22nd April 2026, the veteran sports administrator called for fairness and consistency in the management of the Kenya Premier League, especially at this crucial stage of the season.

“I’m not speaking as Gor Mahia chairman, but as a stakeholder in the entire football game. Are we truly satisfied with the level of officiating in our league?

According to Senior Counsel Rachier, there have been questionable referring decisions at a very critical point of the season.

‘’Justice must prevail not just for Gor Mahia, but for every team in the league. We are not asking for favors, only that the rules are applied fairly.” Note Rachier

There has been public outcry over an increase in alleged poor officiating in KPL matches, with the recent incident occurring when Gor Mahia was awarded a penalty by the centre referee in their game against Bandari FC, only for it to be overturned by an assistant referee without the intervention of a VAR assistant.

The club noted that poor officiating not only demoralizes players and fans but also damages the reputation of the league, adding that matches should be decided on merit rather than external factors.

Rachier’s concern comes just a few days before Gor Mahia faces their arch-rival AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday, 26th April 2026 at Nyayo Stadium, where he has rallied Kogalo fans and other football lovers to turn up in large numbers to support the teams. He has also called on the host team, Ingwe, to review ticket prices to make them more affordable for fans.

“Let’s make ticketing affordable to attract more fans. Looking at the current state of the economy, it is not very favourable. We do not have the power to decide how our opponents price their tickets, but we can only appeal to them to consider the fans’ concerns.”

Regarding the incident that happened over the weekend during the Kogalo match against Bandari FC, where thugs accessed the dressing room and stole valuable items, Gor Mahia Secretary General Nicanor Arum has confirmed that investigations into the theft incident at Kasarani are progressing well.

According to Arum, the club has already submitted CCTV footage to the police to aid in the probe.

“We have handed over CCTV footage to the police, and the matter is now progressing well with investigations ongoing,” he said.

The incident, which occurred in the first half of the game, saw Gor Mahia players and staff reportedly lose phones, money, and other personal belongings.
