“I Protested Corruption Naked in Front of Parliament!”- Norah Kobusingye’s Story of Shame, Courage & Defiance

On 2nd September 2024, Norah Kobusingye made headlines when she marched to Uganda’s Parliament with her body nearly bare, painted in the country’s national colours, protest slogans on her chest and anger boiling inside.

Alongside fellow activists Aloikin Praise Opoloje and Kemitooma Nyina’kyenzibo, she staged a nude protest against corruption and demanded the resignation of the Speaker of Parliament. They were arrested and tortured but that did not stop her from speaking up, it only lit the fire inside her even more.

A journalist and human rights defender, Norah has built her voice on experience. She has been inside the system and the prison cells meant to break her. In Luzira Prison, she was tortured and stripped naked in front of male officers, but the brutality only sharpened her voice.

As co-Executive Director of Freedom Hive Uganda, Norah now works with communities, movements and activists across the country to fight corruption, push for gender equality and demand justice. In 2025, she was shortlisted for the EU Human Rights Defenders Award for her fearless work.
