Tanzanian opposition leader Hon. John Heche, who was stopped at the Sirari border while attempting to travel to Kenya for Raila Odinga’s burial, has sent a heartfelt message of condolence to the Odinga family and the people of Kenya.
In his message, Heche described Raila as a pillar of democracy and a brother in the struggle for justice and equality, praising his courage, humility and lifelong commitment to good governance in Africa.
Heche noted that Raila’s influence stretched beyond Kenya’s borders, inspiring movements for freedom and reform across the region. “Raila’s legacy of courage and unity will continue to guide generations to come,” he said.
The CHADEMA Deputy Chairperson added that being barred from crossing into Kenya deepened his pain, saying he had hoped to personally pay his final respects to a man he regarded as both a mentor and a friend.
Heche was among the first Tanzanian opposition figures to publicly express solidarity with the people of Kenya following Raila’s death, emphasizing that democratic ideals know no borders. His statement comes amid growing debate over regional cooperation, free movement and political tolerance within the East African Community.
