Former Vice President of Kenya, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, has appealed to Members of Parliament (MPs) to process an impeachment motion against President William Ruto over the recent unrest in the country and the subsequent orders to police officers.
Speaking during the burial of Boniface Kariuki, who was shot by a police officer at close range on June 17, 2025, in Nairobi, on Friday, July 11, 2025, Kalonzo said that a brave legislator should come up and sponsor the motion.
“I join my colleagues in agreeing that the best way for Ruto is to resign. There should be a brave Kenyan legislator who should bring a motion of impeachment,” Kalonzo said.
He added, “To me, the thirteenth parliament was impeached by the Kenyan people. But some stayed there and we know them.”
Kalonzo equally indicated that Kenyans may be surprised to find out that several MPs, who support the president, could vote in support of the impeachment motion, to protect their seats in the 2027 polls.
He castigated the recent directive by Ruto that police officers should shoot rowdy people attempting to loot and destroy property in the leg, saying that it was against the provisions of the constitution.
“What has gone on record internationally is that William Ruto, a president, has gone against the constitution and ordered that his citizens be shot; never mind that he says they be shot in the leg,” Kalonzo remarked.
“Rex Masai was shot in the leg, and he died. How will the police aim and ensure that only the legs are hit? A president is now saying that his citizens saying that his citizens should be killed.”
He equally indicated that the shoot-to-kill orders given by the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, may have come from high up.
“Murkomen said he was acting on orders from above; William has now made it clear that Murkomen was acting on the express instructions of a sitting president who has sworn to uphold the constitution of the Republic of Kenya,” Kalonzo said.
“If the president does not want to resign, he could be impeached; and if he survives that, there is a third option to vote him out in 2027.”
