Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially ratified the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza in a Gazette Notice.

The Gazette notice dated August 20, 2024 confirms her removal from office following the Senate’s decision to uphold the Meru County Assembly’s impeachment.
Mwangaza’s impeachment was based on three main charges: gross violation of the constitution and other laws, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.

Despite a High Court reprieve suspending her removal until the matter is fully heard, the Senate proceeded with the impeachment.
The High Court had temporarily halted Mwangaza’s impeachment and issued conservatory orders preventing the implementation of the Senate’s decision to remove her from office.
The court’s order aimed at preventing the Speaker of the Senate or any other authority to announce a vacancy in the governor’s office until further notice, to which the Senate Speaker has disregarded.
