Kenyan and Ugandan Activists Still Detained in Tanzania, Tanganyika Law Society President Issues Statement

Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire remain in custody in Tanzania after their initial reported deportation, the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) confirmed on Wednesday, May 21st 2025. The two were detained earlier this week after traveling to Dar es Salaam to observe a court appearance by CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu, who faces charges of treason.

Initial reports had suggested that Mwangi and Atuhaire were deported after being arrested on May 19th 2025. However, TLS President Boniface Mwabukusi clarified that the activists were not deported but are currently being held by the Tanzanian Immigration Department. According to Mwabukusi, the two have been moved out of police custody and efforts are underway to resolve the situation.

The arrest of Mwangi and Atuhaire comes amid rising concerns over a crackdown on government critics in Tanzania. Lissu’s trial has sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing the Tanzanian government of silencing opposition voices. Both Mwangi and Atuhaire were in Tanzania to attend the trial as international observers.

Mwabukusi called for respect for legal processes, urging immigration authorities to act in accordance with Tanzania’s constitution and the principles of justice.
