Nyamau, a revered figure in the world of athletics, was part of Kenya’s historic 4x400m relay team that clinched the gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Alongside teammates Charles Asati, Julius Sang, and Robert Ouko, Nyamau helped cement Kenya’s reputation as a powerhouse in track and field. He also won a silver medal in the same event at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Born in Kisii County, Nyamau joined the Kenya Defence Forces in 1963 and served until his retirement in 1997. His contributions to both sport and national service earned him widespread respect.

In recent months, Nyamau had been battling gall bladder cancer and had appealed for support, expressing concern over the lack of recognition and assistance for retired athletes. His family confirmed that he died peacefully with loved ones by his side.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country, with fellow athletes, government officials, and fans remembering Nyamau not only for his achievements on the track but also for his humility and patriotism. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
