Kenyan Police Apologize After Woman Suffers Miscarriage in Custody

Kenya’s police department has apologised to Kenyans following an incident in which pregnant detainee Milka Wangari suffered a miscarriage in police cells after she was arrested for allegedly stealing 9 thousand Kenyan shillings from her employer, Joseph Gatuitha.

Reports state that police at the station refused to take the detainee to the hospital despite her complaining that she was in pain. The detainee was later found in the morning in police cells, having lost her pregnancy.

Already, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Rwanyambo police station in Nyandarua County and all other officers on duty have been interdicted.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already launched an investigation into the unfortunate matter.

Nyandarua County police commander Stella Cherono visited the police station and apologized, promising action against those responsible. An incident that has sparked a lot of outrage in Kenya.

The incident comes as police oversight authorities told Kenya’s parliament that 20 detainees have died in police custody in the past four months, including the murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang, who lost his life at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
