The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for parts of Central Kenya, Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley, and the Southeastern lowlands from Thursday, until Saturday, November 16, 2024.
The advisory warns of rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours, with intensities reaching over 30mm in 24 hours on Friday.
“Rainfall of more than 20mm in 24hrs is expected from Thursday 14th November, 2024 in parts of Central Rift valley, Central including Nairobi area and southeast lowlands,” reads the advisory.
Counties likely to be affected include Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni.
“People living downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers should be careful since water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining within the area,” warned the Met Department.
Residents in these areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential flash floods and to avoid driving or walking through moving water. Those living in landslide-prone areas, especially on the slopes of the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, should remain vigilant
