Police Accused of Assaulting 16 CHADEMA Supporters Outside Court During Tundu Lissu’s Trial

Tanzania’s main opposition party CHADEMA has condemned what it describes as excessive use of force by police against supporters who had gathered outside the High Court in Dar es Salaam to follow the ongoing treason trial of party chairperson Tundu Lissu.

In a statement released Monday October 6th, the party listed 16 people who were injured during the incident, including Flora Mkumbwa, Salum Kitenge, Saragana Bwire, Peter Msusi, Awadhi Kalonga, Obadia Mbekaka, Emanuel Akiyoo, Stanslaus Rutta Kitare, Aron Stephano, Tabia Mwakikuti, Ibrahim Haduni, Jackobo Chiungu, Aloni Stephano, Jacob Bailemba, Naomi Nyitambe and Jacob Kamonga.

According to the statement signed by Brenda Rupia, the party’s Director of Communications and Publicity, several people were beaten and dispersed by police officers in the court compound. The party says Stanslaus Rutta Kitare was seriously injured after being struck on the head multiple times and was later admitted to Muhimbili National Hospital for emergency treatment.

“The operation was led by Ilala District Police Commander (OCD) Shomari Himbuka, who personally directed officers to assault citizens exercising their constitutional right to attend an open court session,” the statement read.

CHADEMA said it continues to support the injured through its emergency fund. The party also urged authorities to ensure that courts remain safe spaces for justice, not scenes of violence.
