President William Ruto bids farewell to former US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, at the State House Nairobi on Tuesday 19th November 2024.
The United States Ambassador who resigned last week, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve and strengthen US-Kenya relations
“I will depart Kenya full of gratitude for the team that has worked tirelessly on my behalf, for the opportunity to serve my country, and for the friendship offered by the government and the people of the beautiful Republic of Kenya.”
Meg Whitman resigned as the US Ambassador to Kenya following the recent US presidential election, where Donald Trump was elected as the 47th President of the United States.
Her resignation is part of the customary protocol where ambassadors submit their resignations when a new president takes office.
Whitman emphasized that her decision was influenced by the impending transition in White House leadership and her desire to prioritize her family’s return to the United States.
She was appointed as the US Ambassador to Kenya which was confirmed by the US Senate on July 14, 2022, and she presented her credentials to President Uhuru Kenyatta on August 5, 2022.
President William Ruto praised Whitman for her dedication and hard work in strengthening the Kenya-United States partnership
“Bid farewell to outgoing US Ambassador Meg Whitman, State House, Nairobi. She has worked hard for the Kenya-United States partnership. For that, we are immensely grateful.” Said Ruto
President Ruto has highlighted that Kenya’s diplomatic ties with the United States have been elevated to the status of Major Non-NATO Ally.
This designation, granted by President Joe Biden, marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries. It allows Kenya to access certain military and financial advantages without the mutual defense commitments that NATO members have
Following Whitman resignation, the embassy will be led by Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard, who will serve as the acting ambassador until a new ambassador is appointed
