President Samia Suluhu fires warning to Kenyan activists

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday said foreign activists would not be allowed to interfere in the country’s affairs after several tried to attend the trial of an opposition leader facing treason charges.

“We have started to observe a trend in which activists from within our region are attempting to intrude and interfere in our affairs,” Samia said in a televised speech.

“I strongly urge our security and defence organs, along with those responsible for overseeing our foreign policy, not to allow ill-mannered individuals from other countries to cross the line here.”

Several Kenyan activists, lawyers, and activists attended today’s Lissu court appearance, while others were denied access to Tanzania and eventually deported back to Nairobi.  Some of those deported were senior counsel Martha Karua, former Kenya Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, and activists Hanifa Adan and Hussein  Khalid.

However, activist Boniface Mwangi is still detained in his hotel room in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Tundu Lissu was today arraigned in Court for treason trial charges, the case was later adjourned until 2nd June 2025. This is to allow police to conclude investigations.
