Seleman Bungara ‘Bwege’, Tanzanian MP Behind Viral ‘Ulisikia Wapi’ Meme, Dies

Former Kilwa South MP Seleman Bungara, popularly known as Bwege, has died. Bungara passed away on Monday March 30th 2026, in Dar es Salaam while receiving treatment. Reports say he died while undergoing dialysis at a private hospital in Kigamboni.

His death brings to a close a political journey that lasted more than 15 years and made him one of Tanzania’s most recognizable opposition figures. He served as Kilwa South MP from 2005, winning several terms under CUF before later joining ACT-Wazalendo. He had also recently announced plans to join CHADEMA.

During his time in Parliament, Bungara became known for his bold stand on public issues, his outspoken style and the humour he often used while making his points. He also served in different parliamentary committees, including those handling agriculture, HIV and AIDS affairs, and social development.

Beyond politics, Bungara became widely known across East Africa in 2020 after a clip from one of his press conferences went viral. In the video, he strongly dismissed claims that he had defected to CCM, asking journalists, “Ulisikia wapi?” The phrase quickly spread online, especially in Kenya, where it became a popular meme and catchphrase used in everyday conversations.

Bungara lost his Kilwa South seat in the 2020 General Election after contesting under ACT-Wazalendo, bringing his 15-year stay in Parliament to an end. Even so, he remained a familiar name in Tanzania’s political scene and online space.

Over the years, he was seen by many as a charismatic and fearless politician whose words often went beyond politics and connected with ordinary people. His death has drawn reactions on social media, where many are remembering him as both a veteran politician and a public figure whose famous phrase crossed borders.
