The Tanzania Police Force has launched an investigation into the abduction of former Ambassador to Cuba, Humphrey Polepole. A man identified as Augustino Polepole, who claims to be the diplomat’s brother, has been summoned by police to assist in the investigation.
According to reports, Humphrey Polepole was abducted from his home in Dar es Salaam on Monday, October 6, 2025. The police have confirmed that they are investigating the claims and have opened a formal investigation file.
The police have stated that they are working to establish the ”authenticity of the claims” and are collecting evidence and statements from various sources. They are also trying to locate Augustino Polepole to obtain his statement and any evidence that may support his allegations, including a claim that a police officer was involved in the incident.
A visit to the house in Boko Basihaya, Dar es Salaam, where the former ambassador was reportedly living, revealed visible damage to the property. The police are investigating whether Humphrey Polepole was residing in or renting the house.
Police Spokesperson David Misime said, “The Police opened a formal investigation file on October 6, 2025, and have already started collecting evidence and statements from various sources to establish the authenticity of the claims.” The police will provide updates on preliminary findings once key steps have been completed.
The incident has sparked concern about the safety of government critics and the protection of human rights in Tanzania, with many calling for a swift and transparent investigation.
