Tanzanian Opposition Leader Tundu Lissu Refuses to Attend Court Hearing via Virtual Session

Tundu Lissu, the Chairman of Tanzania’s opposition party Chadema, has refused to participate in his treason case hearing through a virtual meeting. Lissu, who faces charges that carry a potential death penalty, was scheduled for a hearing in Dar es Salaam’s Kisutu Magistrate Court today. However, Lissu insisted that his case be heard in person, arguing that his physical presence in court was crucial, as per the law.

Lissu, 57, has been a vocal critic of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, accusing her of using the same harsh tactics as her predecessor, John Magufuli. His refusal to join the online hearing follows his party’s disqualification from the upcoming elections after they refused to sign an electoral code of conduct.

Lissu has been arrested multiple times in the past, but this is the first time he faces such a serious charge. In his previous court appearance, he boldly declared that the treason case was “a path to liberation.” His lawyers, along with a team of 28 other attorneys, are representing him as the case continues without his physical presence.
