On the evening of 4th April 2025, Mwanzo TV, in collaboration with Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), hosted a key Twitter Space discussion on the ongoing Tanzanian 2020 election case filed at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR). The session brought together key voices to discuss the case and its broader implications for democracy, human rights and electoral justice across East Africa.
The ongoing case has become a key topic in discussions about electoral justice, especially after claims of electoral fraud, violence and human rights violations during Tanzania’s 2020 elections. The African Court’s decision to reopen the case has brought new hope that the legal system can help address these challenges and make sure that future elections in Tanzania and the region are fair, free and transparent.

During the space, the conversation focused on how the Tanzanian election case is affecting the country’s politics and why it matters for the whole East African region. Key topics that we discussed were the challenges faced by opposition parties, activists and how the media is being controlled in Tanzania. The conversation also highlighted how important it is for countries in the East Africa region to stand together to protect democracy and freedom.
As the discussion continued, it became clear that the Tanzania election case is not only about holding Tanzania responsible but also about setting an example for how elections should be held in the entire region. The speakers talked about the lessons we can learn from this case and the need to make sure that Tanzania’s 2025 elections are fair and transparent.
The session concluded with a call for more efforts in advocacy, working together across the region and making legal changes to protect the fairness of elections. There was a strong focus on the importance of young people, civil society groups and regional leaders getting involved to help bring about positive change.
