Tanzania’s Dr. Faustine Ndugulile Elected WHO Regional Director for Africa

Dr. Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile

In a historic move, Tanzania’s Dr. Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile has been elected as the new Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. The election, held on August 27, 2024, in Brazzaville, Congo, marks a significant milestone as Dr. Ndugulile becomes the first Tanzanian and East African to hold this prestigious position since its inception 72 years ago.

Dr. Ndugulile, a former Deputy Minister for Health and the current Member of Parliament for Kigamboni, secured 25 out of 46 votes, defeating candidates from Niger, Rwanda and Senegal. His election comes after a compelling speech at the 74th Session of the WHO Afro Regional Committee, where he emphasized his commitment to transformative change across the continent.

During his speech, Dr. Ndugulile praised the achievements of his predecessor, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, particularly in reducing maternal and infant mortality and fighting diseases such as TB, Malaria, and HIV/AIDS. He outlined his priorities, which include ensuring access to quality healthcare for all, enhancing Africa’s preparedness for epidemic outbreaks, strengthening accountability within WHO’s Africa region, and improving collaboration among member states on health matters.
