Tanzania’s opposition party, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), is holding its internal leadership election today, January 21, 2025, with key positions, including the national chairmanship, at stake.
Tundu Lissu, a candidate for the chairmanship, has appointed Godbless Lema as his election agent. Freeman Mbowe, the incumbent chairman, has appointed Boniface Jacob, also known as Boni Yai, as his agent. The appointments were confirmed by Chadema’s Secretary-General, John Mnyika, who reassured that they comply with all election regulations.
This election has attracted considerable attention as Tundu Lissu challenges Freeman Mbowe for the chairmanship, while John Heche faces Ezekiel Wenje for the deputy chairmanship. Both Lissu and Heche are seen as reformist figures, seeking to bring meaningful change to Tanzania’s political landscape, especially at a time when Chadema’s leaders have faced growing pressure from the current regime.
The outcome of this election could shape the future of Chadema and Tanzanian opposition politics.
