TLS: Boniface Mwabukusi life is in danger

The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) has condemned the assassination threats against its President, Advocate Boniphace Mwabukusi, and called on the security agencies to intervene and act swiftly.

According to an official statement issued on Monday by the TLS Governing Council through its Vice President, Advocate Laetitia Petro Ntagazwa, the threats were conveyed to Mr Mwabukusi on May 10, 2025, through a text message sent to his phone from the Tanzanian number 0792705831. According to the messages, there is a deliberate plan by assassins to end Mwabukisi’s life.

‘’TLS condemns and denounces this act as it is against the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, 1977 and the Laws of our Country”. Reads the statement from TLS

Emphasizing its legal obligations, TLS has clarified that under section 4(d) of the TLS Act, Chapter No. 307, the association has a duty to protect its members as well as the general public.

TLS has asked the Police Force to ensure that it takes action against those responsible for sending the threats, and identifies them using the telephone information.

“TLS calls on the Government authorities, especially the Police Force, responsible for the protection of civilians and their property, to ensure that Advocate Boniphace A. K. Mwabukusi, like other citizens, is safe at all times,, said Laetitia.

In addition, TLS has said it will continue to closely monitor the investigation into the incident as it aims to harass not only their member, but also the leader of the entire institution.

“It is also clear that the threats against Brother Boniphace A. K. Mwabukusi are related to his position as the Chief Spokesperson of TLS, as he is threatened for being a vocal speaker, which is the basis and responsibility of his position as Chairman of the Governing Council and President of TLS”, TLS explained.

TLS has emphasized that it will not hesitate to use legal means to prevent or combat such threats.

“It should be noted that the TLS Governing Council cannot remain silent when it sees its supreme Leader (President) threatened with life for discharging his duties in accordance with the law. Such a threat is not only for Brother Mwabukusi, it is for the entire TLS Governing Council and the entire TLS. Crimes of this kind are inappropriate, we condemn them and will not tolerate them’’
