Kenya will observe Mazingira Day on October 10th, with a national celebration to be held at Nairobi’s Arboretum. The event will be led by Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, starting at 7 a.m. This day encourages all Kenyans to take part in environmental conservation efforts, including clean-up activities and tree planting.

Mazingira Day, formerly known as Utamaduni Day, was renamed earlier this year after President William Ruto signed the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendment Bill), 2024, into law. The new focus on environmental sustainability aligns with Kenya’s commitment to restoring forests and combating climate change.

CS Duale emphasized the importance of public participation, urging citizens to engage in activities such as clearing waste from homes, roads, parks, and beaches. He also encouraged tree planting as part of the government’s plan to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land by 2032 and plant 15 billion trees within the same period.

The day not only raises awareness about environmental issues but also supports Kenya’s broader goals for sustainable development. Duale will be joined by Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi and other government officials at the celebration.

This year’s Mazingira Day is a call for urgent action from both the government and the public to ensure a prosperous and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
