Where is Deusdedith Soka? Tanzanian Activist’s Disappearance After Arrest Raises Concern

As of August 21, 2024, the whereabouts of Deusdedith Soka, a prominent Tanzanian youth activist and opposition party CHADEMA leader from Temeke, remain unknown.
Soka, who has been a vocal critic of the Tanzanian government, was reportedly illegally detained by police on August 18, 2024, after attending a church service in Buza.

His arrest, alongside fellow CHADEMA members Jacob Mlay and Frank Mbisa, was witnessed by several onlookers.

According to CHADEMA’s statement, Soka’s phone, which has been in police custody since September 2023, was used on August 19, 2024, to send a message to the Temeke District party chairman.

The message claimed that Soka was fleeing the country due to internal conflicts within the party and the potential chaos from a planned protest on August 26, 2024.

CHADEMA has condemned the ongoing detention of its leaders and demanded their immediate release or a formal charge in court.

The activist’s disappearance follows a series of previous detentions and harassment by authorities, including an incident where Soka reported being followed by suspicious individuals and vehicles.

His latest arrest has sparked concerns among various human rights groups and opposition parties who fear for his safety.

Soka had recently called for nationwide protests planned for August 26, 2024, to demand constitutional reforms and to highlight the issue of abductions in Tanzania.

Despite the growing pressure, the police have yet to provide any clear information regarding Soka’s current location or condition.
