President William Ruto has announced a major partnership between Kenya and the National Basketball Association (NBA) aimed at boosting the sport in the country. The NBA plans to construct 100 basketball courts in schools and communities across Kenya over the next ten years.
This initiative aims to encourage the growth of basketball and provide more opportunities for young people to engage in the sport. Additionally, the NBA is setting up its commercial hub in Nairobi, which is expected to attract significant investment and enhance Kenya’s profile in the global sports scene.
President Ruto met with NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday 9th October, 2024. Also in attendance were five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher, U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. During the meeting, Tatum presented President Ruto with an NBA jersey as a token of appreciation.
This collaboration is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as a key player in basketball development across Africa, with the NBA expressing its commitment to supporting the growth of the sport in the country.
