Prof. Sarungi, a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and former government minister, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, at the age of 89, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in healthcare, education, and public service.

A Lifelong Dedication to Medicine and Public Service

Born on March 23, 1936, in Utegi, Mara, Prof. Sarungi’s commitment to healthcare and public service began early in life. After completing his primary and secondary education in Tanzania, he traveled abroad for further studies, receiving a scholarship to pursue medical education in Hungary. He earned his medical degree at the University of Szeged, followed by further specialization in orthopedic surgery and trauma at the University of Vienna and replantation surgery at the University of Shanghai.

Prof. Sarungi’s dedication to improving healthcare in Tanzania was reflected in his academic career. He became a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1972 and eventually rose to become a professor. He was also an external examiner at the Nairobi University. His leadership in the medical field led to the establishment of the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), which is one of the country’s leading institutions in orthopaedic care. He served as the Director-General of Muhimbili Medical Centre from 1984 to 1990, where he made significant contributions to enhancing healthcare delivery in Tanzania.

Political Leadership and Contributions

Beyond his medical career, Prof. Sarungi played an active role in Tanzanian politics. Appointed by President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, he served as Minister of Health from 1990 to 1992, later taking on roles as Minister of Communications and Transport, and Minister of Education and Culture. In 1996, President Benjamin Mkapa appointed him as the Regional Commissioner for Coast, and he later served as the Regional Commissioner for Kilimanjaro.

His political career also included a decade-long term as a Member of Parliament for Rorya, where he worked to improve national policies on defense and education. Prof. Sarungi’s leadership extended beyond the political arena, where he contributed to various community-based and professional organizations, including serving as the president of the Tanzanian Medical Association and contributing to the national sports community.

A Nation Gathers to Honor a National Icon

Opposition leaders, including Chadema Chairman Tundu Lissu, Vice Chairman John Heche, and Central Committee Member Godbless Lema, arrived to honor the late professor. Political figures such as former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba, former CCM Secretary-General Abdulrahman Kinana, and Joseph Butiku, who served as Secretary to Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, also joined the ceremony. Ambassador Christopher Liundi attended, alongside various medical professionals, led by the Tanzania Orthopaedic Association (TOA), who arrived early to honor their late colleague.

The presence of these leaders from various sectors reflected the broad influence Prof. Sarungi had across Tanzanian society, as he was cherished both as a public servant and a national icon.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Prof. Sarungi was not only a skilled surgeon and politician but also a philanthropist and sports enthusiast. He dedicated time to serving in leadership roles within several institutions, including the Tanzania Football Federation and various health organizations. His remarkable achievements earned him numerous awards and honors, including international recognition for his work in orthopedic surgery and his humanitarian efforts.

One of his most notable qualities was his selflessness in serving his community. On more than one occasion, Prof. Sarungi set aside his political duties to assist in emergency situations, including performing surgeries for accident victims and aiding those injured in major disasters, such as the tragic 2002 train accident in Dodoma.

Daughter Maria Sarungi’s Absence at the Funeral

While Tanzania gathered to honor Prof. Sarungi’s life and contributions, his daughter, human rights activist Maria Sarungi, was unable to attend the funeral due to security concerns. Maria, who has been an outspoken critic of the Tanzanian government, expressed her reasons for missing the funeral in a voice note that was played during the ceremony.

In her message, Maria shared that safety concerns were the primary reason for her absence. Known for her activism and as a strong critic of the Tanzanian government, Maria has often faced challenges related to her outspoken views.

Despite not being there physically, Maria’s presence was felt through her heartfelt tribute to her father, highlighting his remarkable influence and the strength he instilled in her.

Prof. Sarungi’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering service to his country have made him a national icon whose impact will never be forgotten.
