Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, CCM’s Secretary-General and now running mate to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, is a seasoned politician with a long career in both government and diplomacy.
Early life and education
Born on December 24th 1971, Nchimbi studied at Uru and Sangu Secondary Schools, later completing advanced education at Forest Hill Secondary School in Mbeya. He went on to Mzumbe University where he earned a diploma in public administration, a master’s in banking and finance and later PhD studies.
Political career
Nchimbi joined CCM’s National Executive Committee in 1997 and later chaired the party’s youth wing. He served as Bunda District Commissioner (2003–2005) before winning the Songea Urban parliamentary seat. He went on to hold several cabinet posts, including Information, Labour and Home Affairs.
Between 2015 and 2023, he served as Tanzania’s ambassador to Brazil and later Egypt before returning to party politics. In January 2024, he was appointed CCM Secretary-General.
Road to Tanzania’s October elections
Nchimbi has publicly condemned political threats and violence, calling them damaging to Tanzania’s stability. In 2024, he distanced CCM from remarks made by a youth leader who threatened government critics, saying such comments were “foolish” and harmful to the party’s image.
Now, as Samia’s running mate, he is set to play a central role in CCM’s campaign ahead of the October elections.
