A section of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmakers have vowed to reject the bill proposing to extend elective term limits from five to seven years.
Led by Kuria East Member of Parliament Marwa Gitayama, the lawmakers criticized the proposal of extending term limits in Kenya, stating that it is not a priority for Kenyans arguing that extending the term to seven years would not solve the pressing issues Kenyans face within five years.
Other MPs, including Robert Gichimu, Rindikiri Mugambi, Jane Kagiri, Julius Taitumu, Reuben Kiborek, and Siyoi Lilian, urged Kenyans to reject the proposal, citing President William Ruto’s public denouncement.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei introduced a bill proposing to extend the term limits for elective leaders from five to seven years. The bill, known as the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2024, aims to amend the Constitution to increase the terms of the President, Governors, Senators, Members of the National Assembly, and Members of County Assemblies.
The proposal has sparked significant controversy and opposition from various quarters, including religious leaders, political parties, and the public. Many argue that the bill undermines democratic accountability and diverts attention from critical issues affecting Kenyans
