New Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced reforms that will see users of accounts with verification badges pay $8 (Ksh. 971.6) per month.
According to Musk, the price has been adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity.
“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month,” he wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.
Musk went on to list priorities that will be accorded to the verified accounts after paying the monthly subscription.
“You will also get priority in replies, mentions & search, which is essential to defeat spam/scam, ability to post long video & audio, half as many ads.”
This move has been met by resistance from tweeps who have strongly opposed the proposed charges.
“To all complainers, please continue complaining, but it will cost $8,” Musk said in response to the uproar.
Kenyan lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi is among those opposing the move, saying he is ready to lose his blue badge than pay a subscription fee for it.
“$8 dollars a month for a blue checkmark is bullshit and will create lords and peasants on the twitter streets. I have no problem losing it and remaining a peasant!” Ahmednasir tweeted.
Lawyer Miguna Miguna has also opposed the move, terming it as greed that would lead to a mass exodus from the social media platform.
“Mr. Elon Musk you don’t need the money. Greed is one of the worst sins. Stop exploiting Twitter users. If you persist, we will organise a mass exodus from Twitter and turn your “investment” into a nightmare! Continue pushing us!” Miguna tweeted.
The changes have also raised concerns on how it will curb impersonation on the social media platform.
