The International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-TRACK Foundation) Board has appointed the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) as the official local issuer of the International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC(E)).
This new role involves EPRA inspecting energy generation facilities across Kenya to verify that the electricity generated is from renewable sources.
EPRA Director-General Daniel Kiptoo mentioned that this milestone aligns with EPRA’s mandate to lead Kenya’s journey towards full realization of renewable and sustainable energy by 2030.
This certification is expected to attract favorable investor attention, as it affirms the eco-friendly status of operations in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals
“Kenya is on the cusp of achieving 100% renewable energy electricity generation which currently stands at 80.04% contribution to the energy mix,” he noted.
“We have remained steadfast in harnessing energy from renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy stands at 26.37%, interconnected solar PV systems (12.38%) and wind energy contributed 12.19%. The trajectory towards renewable energy is expected to persist as more power projects are completed and connected to the grid from geothermal sources.”
With the I-REC(E) certification, EPRA is well-positioned to attract favorable investor attention. This certification not only validates their commitment to renewable energy but also aligns with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.
Investors are increasingly looking for eco-friendly and sustainable operations, and this certification enhances EPRA’s credibility in the renewable energy sector.
According to EPRA’s report, the authority plans to review the Energy (Energy Management) Regulations, 2012.
These regulations require facilities consuming more than 180,000 kWh of energy to conduct energy audits at least once every three years and implement the identified energy-saving measures. This review aims to enhance energy efficiency and ensure that facilities comply with the latest standards and practices.
