Willy Chelewa, a promising young athlete, tragically passed away after collapsing at a hotel in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
According to the area police chief, Peter Mulinge, is alleged that the twenty-year-old athlete had just consumed a meal of black tea and rice when he suddenly collapsed.
Despite immediate efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead on the spot.
The hotel management immediately alerted the authorities, who responded to the situation at the scene.
Police have gathered food samples eaten by the athlete as investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the athlete’s death.
Chelewa had recently participated in the Nairobi City Marathon and was training in Kaptagat, a renowned high-altitude training area for athletes and had recently secured a Chinese sponsorship for international races, which was expected to open new opportunities for him.
Before his demise, Chelewa was using the hotel room as a training base while working with his fellow athletes in the region known for its numerous training camps.
